Introduction:

Currently, we are at 1.1% EV adoption in India, and yet we are witnessing a massive demand from EV owners for charging stations; the most significant problem for EV owners is the lack of charging stations in India. Now imagine when we’ll have 20% or 30% of EV penetration on our roads. We will need many more EV charging stations to sustain the EV revolution in India, and for that, the government is also working on the EV charger cost in India.

The EV charger cost is reducing with every passing year. As various businesses and governments support the EV revolution, the cost of EV infrastructure is reducing with its effects. In this blog post, we’re going to see how many different types of EV chargers are there in India, what’s the price difference between them, and what’s the cost of EV chargers in India.

EV charger cost in India:

When you buy any EV, the company provides a default charger along with it, and it is less powerful because a high-power charger costs a lot more. Although the cost of EV chargers is dipping every year, here’s the complete table of all the EV charger cost with their respective ratings in India:

Rating

Price (₹)

3.3kW

14 – 20 k

7.2kW

35 – 45 k

10kW

55 – 65 k

15kW

100 – 200 k

30kW

450 – 600 k

50kW

750 – 900 k

60kW

900k – 1.2M

120kW

1.25 – 1.4 M

The given prices may differ from CPO to CPO, but the critical thing to notice here is the understanding of the market and the price range in which you may expect to get it in the market.

Now we’re gonna see the different types of EV chargers used in India.

Types of connectors and EV chargers used in India:

While talking about the EV chargers, what’s most essential with the EV chargers is standardisation, and that’s the area where we all lack. Unlike petrol/diesel vehicles in our EV industry, we still don’t have any standard nozzle and fuel tank combination, which still needs to be fixed, and thankfully, our govt is continuously working on solving it by reducing the EV charger cost.

However, we have some level of standardisation in the EV 4-wheeler industry and here are the types of EV chargers used in the EV 4-wheeler industry.

  1. GB/T
  2. ChadeMO
  3. CCS – 2

GB/T:

This connector is mainly used for DC fast-charging in electric 2 & 3-wheelers. However, the BIS (Beauro of Indian standards) has recently declared Ather’s fast charger connecter as the standard connecter for DC fast charging in electric scooters.

ChadeMo:

This was an old EV connecter that was used in older versions of Mahindra’s electric cars like the Mahindra e-Varito, ev-Go, etc., and now this connecter is used mainly by Japanese electric cars. This connecter is rarely used in any currently present and upcoming electric cars.

CCS – 2:

CCS – 2 Now this is something that you need to pay attention to. The CCS–2 is used in almost all the electric 4-wheelers you see on the road today and the upcoming EVs are gonna use the same connecter and charger type.

How to select the Best EV charger:

Now, while searching for an EV charger, you may see various chargers from different companies with vast price differences but the same power rating. After seeing so many overwhelming results, you may need clarification and will decide to go with a low EV charger cost, but that might not be a wise decision!

Now, in this section, let’s see what factors and parameters you must check for while searching for the best EV chargers.

CMS & Connectivity:

One of the most essential features differentiating a good EV charger from a bad one is the connectivity and the fluency of the app it provides.

Design:

This is an obvious point but an important one to consider: the charger must be designed user friendly and easy to use.

After service:

This fact is highly unheard of but worth your attention. The EV chargers, too, have a life and require maintenance and servicing for proper operation. So, before buying an EV charger, you must ask about the after-service and maintenance charges.

Company reputation/reviews:

Must go for the user reviews and the company’s reputation and position in the market. It helps you choose a better one.

Cooling System:

In DC fast EV chargers, there’s an inbuilt cooling system to maintain the temperature in high-speed charging. You must ensure the quality of the cooling system before choosing the right EV charger.
